Benha National University Organized a Cultural Seminar Titled "Religious Tolerance and Societal Values"

Under the auspices of Prof. Tamer Samir, President of the University, and in collaboration with the Egyptian Family House, Benha National University organized a cultural seminar titled "Religious Tolerance and Societal Values" as part of the "Awareness" initiative launched by the university.

The seminar was attended by:

  • Mahmoud Shakl, Vice President for Employment, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship,
  • His Grace Bishop Ermia, Head of the Coptic Orthodox Cultural Center and Assistant Secretary-General of the Egyptian Family House,
  • Mohamed Abu Zaid Al-Amir, Vice President of Al-Azhar University and General Coordinator of the Egyptian Family House,
  • several Deans from the Colleges
  • Sheikh Abdul Rahman Radwan, Director of Religious Advocacy in Kalyobiya and Assistant Secretary of the University.

In his speech, Prof. Tamer Samir emphasized the importance of believing in the diversity of civilizations and the differences among nations, cultures, and a religion, pointing out that diversity is a divine and universal principle. He noted that Egypt serves as a model for coexistence and cultural connection among religions, stressing that tolerance is a fundamental part of the values that enhance national unity and citizenship. He affirmed that religious tolerance is not merely a moral value but is the cornerstone of building a strong and cohesive society, and that the university plays a significant role in spreading these values among students and enhancing their understanding of how to deal with diversity with respect and understanding.

Prof. Mahmoud Shakl spoke about the importance of education in promoting values of tolerance, noting that universities represent the main platform for conveying these values among students. He explained that enhancing tolerance and mutual respect among religions and sects requires concerted efforts from educational and religious institutions.

His Grace Bishop Ermia stressed the necessity of spreading values of tolerance among the heavenly religions, indicating that these values should be part of daily life, especially in Egypt, which experiences unique religious and cultural diversity. He added that religious tolerance is not just about accepting others, but is a value that reflects love and respect.

Prof. Mohamed Abu Zaid also focused on the need to enhance cooperation between educational and religious institutions in promoting values of tolerance, emphasizing that these values are foundational for national unity in the face of contemporary challenges. He pointed out that tolerance is not limited to accepting diversity but extends to supporting cooperation and partnership among all segments of society.

Prof. Mohamed Said, Dean of Engineering College, confirmed the role of universities in promoting tolerance among students from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds, stressing the importance of educational activities and seminars in spreading these values. He also added that renewing religious discourse and rejecting violence among community segments are urgent necessities to achieve tolerance and enhance human values.

This initiative is part of the university's commitment to establishing initiatives, events, and seminars that enhance the awareness of its students and contribute to building a community characterized by tolerance and understanding.
