Benha National University Advances Applied Learning Through Energy Sciences Field Trips to Ras Sudr

Benha National University has organised a series of scientific field trips to Ras Sudr, in South Sinai Governorate, for first year students at the Faculty of Energy Sciences. Held under the patronage of Prof. Tamer Samir, President of Benha National University, and Prof. Hussein El Maghraby, Vice President for Academic Affairs, the trips were designed to strengthen the practical dimension of students’ education, connect academic knowledge with real world applications, and provide first hand experience in geology, energy and natural resources.

Supervised by Prof. Mohamed Mostafa Afifi, Director of Programmes at the Faculty of Energy Sciences, the trips offered students an enriching opportunity to combine academic study with field based exploration in Ras Sudr’s distinctive natural landscape. The region’s rock formations and geological structures offered valuable insight into the Earth’s history, revealing features shaped over millions of years and reflecting the area’s rich geological heritage.

On their first field trip, students explored the region’s mountains, valleys and striking natural scenery, examining its principal rock units and geological formations. They investigated rock characteristics and landforms at close quarters and explored the geological features and natural resources preserved within the Earth’s layers. This direct engagement with the natural environment enabled students to apply their theoretical knowledge while strengthening their observational and geological analysis skills.

The field programme also included a visit to the concession area of the General Petroleum Company. There, students learned about oil exploration and production activities and examined the importance of geological studies in identifying petroleum deposits and assessing natural resources. The visit also highlighted the vital role of the petroleum industry in supporting the energy sector.

The programme further included a visit to the area’s natural sulphur springs, where students explored their distinctive geological and natural characteristics and learned about their formation. This provided an additional opportunity to examine the variety of geological phenomena and natural resources that distinguish Ras Sudr.

The field trips form part of Benha National University’s strategy to strengthen applied education and field-based training, embedding experiential learning and exploration within the student experience. By developing students’ scientific and practical skills and broadening their understanding of the natural world, the University seeks to prepare graduates with the knowledge and professional capabilities needed to meet labour market demands in energy, geology and natural resources.
